Volunteers: Time to Speak Up
Hi Friend,
The courts handed us two losses this week on mail-in ballots. But there's a door still open, and it shuts Thursday, July 2 at 5:00 PM Eastern.
The U.S. Postal Service is taking public comments on a proposed rule that would finally bring some transparency to ballot mail — the Election Mail logo on envelopes, barcodes so ballots can be tracked, and a reconciliation process to match ballots returned against ballots sent. By law, USPS has to read and weigh every comment before it decides anything.
Here's how to comment. It takes five minutes:
Email: PCFederalRegister@usps.gov
Subject line (use exactly this): Ballot Mail
In the body: your comment, plus your full name and mailing address — USPS won't count it without them. Your address stays private but is required.
A few tips: write in your own words, keep it to three or four honest sentences, and be civil. If you've ever mailed a ballot and wondered whether it actually showed up, say so. That's exactly what tracking and reconciliation fix.
Need a starting point? Feel free to use this in and personalize it to your voice:
I am writing in support of the proposed rule, Ballot Mail for Federal Elections. As a voter, I want confidence that every mailed ballot can be tracked, handled consistently, and accounted for, regardless of political affiliation. I urge the Postal Service to finalize this common-sense step toward greater transparency and a reliable chain of custody.
[Your name]
[Your mailing address]
One note: everything you submit becomes public record, so don't include anything beyond the name and address USPS requires.
A volunteer in Texas already sent her email (and her friends have, too!)
I strongly support of the proposed rule, Ballot Mail for Federal Elections as an engaged citizen and former election judge for many years. I am stunned to learn that every ballot sent by mail can be tracked and accounted for and yet we are not doing that. I have witnessed irregularities and know if we enact a clear chain of custody coupled with transparency of the voting process, those would be fewer.
People so often fail to give the Postal Service credit for the huge job they do. Finalizing this rule could go a long way to improving that. Please finalize this rule. - Pattie
