Today we’re doing something we’ve never done before.
We’re building something new — and we’re asking you to help build it with us.
But first, let me name something we all already feel: the distance between the American people and Washington, D.C. It’s real, it’s grown for decades, and no speech from either party has closed it. We all know the truth in our bones — government will not fix itself. It never has. Renewal in this country has only ever come from one place: the people.
And when the American people decide to build something together, it gets built. A collection of farmers and shopkeepers stood up to the most powerful empire on earth — and won. A generation of ordinary Americans retooled their factories in a matter of months and became the arsenal that saved the free world. And when we decided to put a man on the moon, we did it in less than a decade — with slide rules and shirt sleeves.
That’s why we know we can do this too. Together, we can do anything.
WAKE UP: Last week a reporter wrote asking about Trapped: Detroit. Because Catherine didn’t give them the conspiracy clickbait they were looking for, the article never ran — but her comments were so on point I wanted to share part of them with you:
“Trapped: Detroit is not a film about an election. It is years of struggle in Detroit’s inner city, condensed into thirty-three minutes of interviews with people who checked their own voter records and found ballots already cast in their names. A mother of six who has never voted in her life, carried on the rolls in 2020 as an absentee voter. A transit worker who voted in person, but was canceled out by a mailed ballot he never requested. A 53-year-old man who has never cast a ballot, but is a recent and regular voter on paper. Nine of them filed suit in federal court. They were told they lacked standing to complain about their own names.
Nobody asked those people how they vote. It wasn’t relevant, and it still isn’t. What was taken from them sits underneath politics entirely — the right to a voice that counts, and is counted. Those nine people didn’t wake up because someone gave a speech. They woke up because they looked at their own records. That’s what waking up actually means here — not being persuaded, but checking.”
EQUIP: Catherine shared something else in that letter that matters even more for what comes next:
“We’ve spent fifteen years raising awareness, and now people are aware, but that was never our ultimate goal. Our goal was to help correct the brokenness in our electoral process: the plumbing, the paperwork, the unglamorous software and machinery that decides whether an election can be trusted.”
Awareness was never the finish line. So we built the tools — the platforms, the data, the capability to check a roll and document what’s there. All of it is now open to any aligned, engaged citizen who wants to use it. You don’t need our permission and you don’t need to be an expert. You need the tools and someone to show you how they work.
That’s what your membership funds first: putting those tools in the hands of everyone who asks.
MOBILIZE: One person with a public records request is easy to dismiss — but 10,000 requests across eight thousand county offices is not.
That’s the strategy.
Not one organization litigating alone — a distributed movement of citizens doing lawful, documented, unglamorous work in their own counties, at the same time, on the record.
It cannot be intimidated out of existence, because there is no single place to apply the pressure.
And it means that when Trapped: Detroit is released and the attacks start rolling in — and they are coming — we absorb them, because the funding isn’t from three large donors who can be pressured. It’s a million Americans who decided this was their cause.
So today we are launching Mobilize A Million.
Not another fundraiser. This is a campaign to put one million Americans into the ranks of this work — awake to what’s broken, equipped to check it themselves, and organized well enough that the people who benefit from the brokenness can no longer count on our silence.
